Volume is an interesting visual element because it defines 3D visuals that have length, width and depth and most visuals used in print and media
e only 2D. Therefore we often try to illustrate volume (mass) through shading, lighting, color and other elements or design features.
Volume is closely related to the element of shape.
Our use of volume in visual design has evolved as design technology as evolved. With the entry of 3D imaging software, CD-ROM, DVD and 3D film and video projection, our ability to render actual 3D shapes with volume have increased.
Fields such as interior design, architecture, industrial design and sculpture have always relied on techniques to model in three dimensions and portray these designs in 2D environments. (1)
